Location: Haiti
Events: Civil unrest, violent crime, kidnapping, and COVID-19 in Haiti, coupled with weak security and health infrastructure, pose increased threats to the safety and well-being of U.S. Citizens throughout Haiti. The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince is extremely limited in its capacity to respond to U.S. Citizens in distress throughout the country. Consequently, U.S. Citizens must rely primarily – and potentially solely – on local authorities and resources for assistance. The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that Haiti has the highest (Level 4) Travel Advisory (“DO NOT TRAVEL”) for kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and COVID-19, and urges extreme caution to anyone deciding to travel and/or remain in Haiti.
Actions to take:
- Avoid all non-essential travel to Haiti;
- U.S. Citizens in Haiti should strongly consider returning to the U.S.;
- Use extreme caution while traveling in the country;
- Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings of people;
- If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area; and
- Make and practice contingency plans for sheltering in place and/or accessing airports.
