Message for U.S. Citizens: U.S. Embassy Port au Prince, Haiti

(December 1, 2021)

Location:  Port au Prince, Haiti

Events:  The U.S. Embassy in Port au Prince is conducting an annual verification of Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) enrollments.  Please log in to your STEP account to verify that your profile, phone numbers, email address, travel dates, and location in Haiti are up-to-date.  If you have any questions, please email

If you are visiting or living in Haiti and have not yet enrolled in STEP, we strongly encourage you to do so!  STEP is a free service that allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate so that we can provide important security and other information to the U.S. community in Haiti.

Benefits of Enrolling in STEP:

  • Receive important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in Haiti, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans.
  • Help the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency, whether natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency.
  • Help family and friends get in touch with you in an emergency.

Haiti has the highest (Level 4) Travel Advisory (“Do Not Travel”) for kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and COVID-19.  The travel advisory for Haiti, available at, notes that kidnapping is widespread and victims regularly include U.S. citizens.

U.S. citizens should carefully consider the risks of traveling to or remaining in Haiti in light of the current security situation and infrastructure challenges.  These issues may limit access to essential services in an emergency, including access to banks, money transfers, urgent medical care, internet and telecommunications, and public and private transportation options.  Please see information on What the Department of State Can and Can’t Do in a Crisis.
